THE SPACE PSYCHOLOGY: A GUIDE ON AN INTERIOR DESIGNER'S TAKE ON HARMONIZING EXHIBITION SPACES.

Updated: Mar 10

INTRODUCTION

In a time when authenticity and self-expression are fully accepted and sought after, there is also a growing need to utilize spaces to communicate these sentiments. This spans various aspects, from the selection of locations, the ambiance of the event, and most importantly, the harmony; a crucial element that fosters a sense of unity in a space, narrates a story, and synchronizes everything into one cohesive entity. This is the focus of our discussion in this article: exploring space psychology through the lens of interior design to understand how to harmonize exhibition spaces.

Design, Planning and Harmonizing

There is more to design than what is immediately apparent, and this applies to everything; people often believe they have a knack for details or possess an artistic flair, which may be correct, as human instincts play a significant role! However, design encompasses more than that; it includes everything from fabric selection to seating arrangements the visuals and above all a true understanding of your client. The final outcome of an exhibition setup usually arises from well-conceived and carefully crafted concepts that are ultimately allowed to be experienced, observed, and appreciated.

Design, Planning and Harmonizing

Comprehending the client's needs

When planning and designing an exhibition, a designer instinctively strives to create a look that is pleasing to the eye, and achieving this involves considering several factors. A clear understanding of the client's needs helps in creating a space that adheres to design principles while keeping both parties content with the outcome.

The nature of the exhibition

Understanding the type of exhibition, whether it's for a product launch, brand awareness, or advocacy, influences the design approach. The exhibition's nature determines the layout, flow, and overall ambiance needed to effectively communicate the intended message.

The size of the space

The dimensions of the exhibition space play a crucial role in design decisions. A properly scaled design ensures that the space feels neither overcrowded nor empty, creating an optimal environment for engagement and exploration.

Challenges and advantages

Every space has its unique characteristics that can be either challenging or advantageous. Identifying these early in the design process allows for creative solutions that transform potential limitations into design opportunities.

Comprehending what your client needs

Listen Attentively

The initial step is to attentively listen to your client and comprehend their creative vision. During this process, be sure to observe aspects of their personality or style; consider what objectives they aim to achieve with the exhibition. Are they seeking to establish a brand presence and strengthen their relationships, or do they have a new product to launch, aiming to attract both anticipated and unexpected markets?

Alternatively, are they looking to advocate for an idea or initiate a movement? Strive to uncover the core message behind the exhibition.

Understand Design Preferences

Next, become acquainted with their design preferences. Do they favor a minimalist approach, or are they inclined towards something more extravagant? Are they looking to make a bold statement, or do they prefer a more relaxed and intimate ambiance?

Consider Aesthetic Unity

Lastly, consider whether the client desires a uniform and industrial aesthetic, or if they prefer to imbue each exhibition booth with a unique touch that emphasizes individuality and variety.

After the discussion of trying to establish their style and the focus of the exhibition it is time to agree on ways to collaborate with all those ideas to see how best to make an event that is appealing and also cater to the functionality of the exhibition and this is where harmony in design plays a big role.

Creating Harmony in Exhibition Spaces

Color and Pattern

Each event has its unique color palette and desired atmosphere. By manipulating color and patterns, you can foster harmony in various ways; for instance, incorporating the same design on the entrance, table runners, and drapery can establish a sense of

consistency and unity.

Emphasis

To make a significant impression, attract traffic, or guide attention toward a specific area, apply emphasis. You might establish a distinct and inviting focal point in the center of the space, at the far end, or along the walls to direct people towards the main area.

Symmetry

Symmetry relates to balance, which is a crucial element that can cause a space to feel heavier on one side or lighter on the other; the goal of symmetry is to create a balanced appearance in a space and design, and some might describe it as creating a mirror effect.

There are numerous factors we should take into account to ensure a space is thoughtfully planned and deigned, but the guide above will provide valuable insights into creating a space that feels complete. The most appealing aspect of designing a space with the goalof achieving harmony is the ability to experiment with various elements to reach that aim; design is an art of creativity, individuality, and at times, abstraction, allowing for multiple pathways to achieve the desired outcome. However, as long as one has a strategy, a vision, and a clear method to realize it, it is uncommon to miss the mark in design, since there are countless ways to achieve a successful result. Ultimately, the priority is to create a space that pleases both the client and yourself as the designer, but the real challenge lies in attaining the satisfaction of both parties! Have fun in designing harmonious and aesthetic space!
